IPL 2020 Players to Watch

The 2020 Indian Premier League gets underway at the end of the month, teams are stepping up preparations ahead of the tournament, with the Mumbai Indians coming in as the reigning champions. As always, the IPL is set to attract major interest from both fans and punters alike, with bookies having started to add markets already. With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the players worth keeping an eye on over the coming weeks.

The IPL is undoubtedly one of the most fast paced and exciting cricket competitions in the world today, with it being a test of even the most skilled player. IPL teams are able to utilise a maximum of eight overseas players, with there being some big names involved this year, including big hitting batsmen and leading pace bowlers. 29 overseas players were recently sold at auction, 13 of which came from Australia. Keeping this in mind, there is perhaps only one player to focus upon initially, with Pat Cummings having been the most expensive individual when he signed for the Kolkata Knight Raiders.

Cummings is currently the No.1 Test bowler in the world, with his last appearance in the IPL coming back in 2017.  The 26-year-old has 17 wickets in 16 IPL matches to date, with it remaining to be seen as to just how effective Cummings can really be in this format of the game. His ability to take early wickets during the powerplay could well be a huge asset to Kolkata, with the Knight Raiders being 2.00 with bookmaker to beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match of the competition.

Elsewhere, after his antics for England during the 2019 World Cup, Ben Stokes is unsurprisingly another name to keep an eye on this year, with the all-rounder hoping to improve upon his modest T20 career figures to date. Despite having scored just nine 50+ scores in T20 matches to date, Stokes is likely to be a key asset for the Rajasthan Royals, despite not being available for the start of the tournament, or the playoffs, due to his international commitments with England.

Another Aussie who is expected to produce big things is Glen Maxwell, with the big hitter having been the second most expensive player at the auction, after being snapped up by the Kings XI Punjab. Maxwell is another who has not saved his best performances for the IPL, however his unorthodox playing style is certain to have fans on the edge of their seats. With the likes of James Neesham and Chris Gayle in their ranks, the Kings XI team will be hoping to better their 6th place finish last year. Bookmaker Betway has them as the 2.10 underdogs to defeat the Delhi Capitals in their opening fixture this year.
