The World Cup currently hosts 32 teams worldwide, all of whom have made it to the tournament through their regional qualifiers. The qualifiers kicked off as early as 2019 and are finalised a few months before the World Cup kicks off. The 32 national teams participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup were drawn into eight groups of four, all facing each other once in the first part of the tournament.
The top two teams from each group then progress to the finals, where the round of 16 begins the journey to the grand final. The winners go on to the quarter-finals, where the winners reach the semi-finals and, finally, the battle for the medals. The World Cup Grand Final will be played at Lusail Stadium on 18 December 2022.
Here are the dates for the various matches played during the tournament:
During the group stage, all matches will be completed after 90 minutes. However, after the group stage, a tie goes to extra time. This is because a winner must be found in each encounter during the finals. Extra time is played for 2 x 15 minutes, and if the score is still tied after this time, the match goes to a penalty shoot-out. Each team will take five shots, and the team with the most goals will win the match. If the teams score the same number of penalties, the shoot-out continues with one further attempt per team until one team has taken the lead.
The World Football Championship will be held in the winter for the first time, but the rest of the tournament will be organised in the same way as before. However, the proximity of the stadiums will mean a more intensive schedule with fewer rest days for the teams. For example, there will be four group stage matches per day instead of three, and the round of 16 will start the day after the last group stage matches are completed.
In the small nation of Qatar, five cities will be hosting the matches during the championship. However, a whopping eight stadiums will be used, with four of these located in the capital city of Doha. The rest are located within an hour away from the capital.
Here we list the cities and stadiums that the football world’s eyes will be on during the summer of 2022:
This will be the first time the championship is played in the Middle East. Qatar is also the smallest nation ever to have the honour of hosting the FIFA World Cup. The tournament’s location has received much criticism, and it now remains to be seen how the nation succeeds in delivering the biggest football party ever.
The football World Cup is held every four years, pitting the best national teams against each other. The tournament is watched by millions of spectators from all corners of the world and is usually considered one of the biggest events ever produced. The first World Cup was held in 1930, and since then, several nations have been crowned world champions. Brasil is so far the top dog with 5 golds in total.
When the very first World Cup was held in 1930, only 13 nations participated. The tournament began with a group stage, with the four group winners progressing to the finals, which consisted of the semi-finals and the World Cup final. For the 1954 tournament, quarter-finals were introduced, with the top two teams from each group advancing. Between 1974 and 1982, the finals were replaced by a further group stage, with the top teams progressing to the medal matches. In 1982, the number of teams increased from 16 to 24. 1998 saw the introduction of the format still used today, with 32 nations taking part in the footballing feast. It is already clear that the number of teams will be increased again from the 2026 World Cup.
It is already clear that the next Men’s World Cup, scheduled to be played in the summer of 2026, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. This will be the first time that three countries will co-host the championship, which will also grow in size to accommodate 48 national teams.
