India is set to tour play three T20s, three ODIs and two Test matches against West Indies starting from 3rd August. The visitors led by Virat Kohli will be looking to do well in the three-match T20 series. The first and second of those matches will be played at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida on August 3 and August 4, 2019. The third and final game of the T20I series will be played at Providence Stadium in Guyana on August 6, 2019.

Both teams are historically a powerhouse in the shortest format of the game and there should be nothing less expected from the upcoming series as well where there will be guaranteed excitement and drama for all the viewers.

West Indies

For West Indies, it is a beginning of their recovery phase from a disappointing International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup campaign where they managed to win just two matches out of the total of nine and finished second from the bottom.

But even then, they played a key role in deciding the four semi-finalists as it was the net run-rate which proved to be the deciding factor where Pakistan missed out on a place in the final four after suffering a gigantic defeat against Windies in their tournament opener.

Coming back to the shortest format, it is a home-like feeling for the Caribbean giants who are a real force to be reckoned with.

It is a format where they are most comfortable with and it is because of this reason they are currently the reigning champions in the T20 format.

Therefore, the home side in the series will be looking at these three matches as a preoperational tool for the 2020 edition of the World T20 where they will be defending their title.

For this series, there are some major inclusions and exclusions as well. The return of veteran off-spinner Sunil Narine and explosive all-rounder Kieron Pollard in all likelihood will prove to be a big positive for the team where there will be a lot of all-rounder options, whereas the exclusions of players like Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo might prove to be a too big of a void for the youngsters to fill up.

The team will be captained by Carlos Brathwaite who will be coming in the series high on confidence after having a relatively good time during the ICC World Cup.

Carlos Brathwaite Cricket West Indies

Carlos Brathwaite of West Indies celebrates scoring a century MANCHESTER, ENGLAND. 22 JUNE 2019 ‘ The West Indies v New Zealand, ICC Cricket World Cup match, at Old Trafford, Manchester, England.

After his heroics in the ICC World T20 2016, the 31-year-old — for the very first time — showed why he is rated as one of the most dangerous batsman in white-ball cricket as he nearly took his team over the line in an outstanding knock during the match against eventual runners up New Zealand.

With him, there is a serious power hitting capable player all over in the batting department where players like Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, John Campbell, Andre Russell and Pollard should be more than enough for any bowling lineup on the planet on any given day.

However, on the bowling front, there is something lacking as there is an apparent deficiency in the wicket takers column.

The bowling attack is being led by the left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell and he will be accompanied by Oshane Thomas, Keemo Paul and Narine, which does not look like it will be enough, at least on paper for the opposition who possessed one of the best batting lineups in the world in this format.

There will be a special focus on the performance of all-rounder Russell. The 31-year-old was selected for the ICC World Cup on the basis of some incredible batting performances for Kolkata Knight Riders during the Indian Premier League (IPL) but failed to live up to the expectations and looked unfit for the most part of the tournament.

On the other hand, team India will also start their new era without the likes of veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The team from the subcontinent will also look at the upcoming series as the beginning of preparation for the next mega event, which will be ICC World T20 next year in Australia.

The Men in Blue are one of the most consistent teams during all the recent ICC mega events, but unfortunately they somehow failed at the final step and returned home without the silverware.

This time around, they were knocked out in the semis from spirited New Zealand despite finishing the league on top of the table.

Keeping that in mind, the selection committee has rightly selected a bunch of young players who can play a big part in the team’s performances in the years to come.

Those young players include 21-year-old left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, 19-year-old Rahul Chahar, 21-year-old Rishabh Pant and 19-year-old Washington Sundar.

However, those young stars will be accompanied with the experienced players like Captain Virat Kohli, his deputy Rohit Sharma and veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, which should be a great learning curve for them.

Two major absentees from the squad which was announced were fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

It is no secret that the former will be a much bigger miss for the team than the latter as he is undoubtedly the best death bowler currently playing in the game.

In his absence, there will be added pressure on veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar who will now going to be leading the pack while guiding the youngster as well.

Surprisingly, India’s spin attack is relatively solid despite dropping the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.

In the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Krunal Pandya and young Sundar, the Men in Blue should have enough to contain or claim important wickets in the middle phase of the innings which can prove to be the real difference at the very end.

On the batting front, there will be a special focus on four players — Dhawan, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer.

Dhawan will be under the microscope as he will be making his way back to the national team after missing the majority of the ICC World Cup with a fractured thumb, whereas Rahul will have his work cut out as there were questions raised about his temperament and class to perform at the highest level after a below-par time in England where he was given ample amount of opportunities in the absence of the veteran left-hander.

On the other hand, Pandey is being around for a long time but has never managed to cement his place in the playing eleven despite having decent numbers at the international arena so this will be his another chance for him to show the selectors that he is their man for a spot in the middle order moving forward, whereas Iyer is relatively new at the international level and this series presents him an opportunity to deliver at the highest level and make his case for more chances for team India in the near future.

Out of all the teams India have faced in their 20-over format history, their record against West Indies is second-worst after New Zealand as they have only managed to win five out of 11 matches.

However, in the recent past, the Men in Blue have clearly an upper hand as they emerged victorious in three out of the last five matches, which included just a single defeat.

The Venues

The first and second of those matches will be played at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida on August 3 and August 4, 2019. The venue will be hosting its ninth and 10th T20I. This will be the seventh time when West Indies will take part in a T20I at the ground. In the previous six matches, the Caribbean giants emerged victorious in three matches whereas they also suffered defeats in two with one match ended without a result.

Highest score by a team at the stadium in a 20-over international match of 245-6 was registered by the home side in the match against India in 2016-17, whereas lowest total of 81 was registered by New Zealand while playing Sri Lanka in 2009-10. Highest individual score at the ground in a T20I match of 110 not out was registered by India’s KL Rahul in 2016-17 whereas best bowling figures of 4-12 was registered by West Indies’ Sunil Narine in 2011-12.

The third match of the series will be played at the Providence Stadium in Providence on August 6, which will be hosting its seventh T20I. Highest team score of 191 for 5 at the venue in a T20 international match was registered by England in 2009-10 while playing against West Indies whereas lowest team total of 68 was registered by Ireland while also playing against the home side. Highest individual score of 100 was registered by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene in 2010. Till now, only three players have managed to score in excess of 50 at the ground in a 20-over international contest and two of them came from the Sri Lanka’s former captain. For West Indies, highest score in a T20I match at the venue is 30 which was scored by former captain Darren Sammy in the match against Ireland in 2010. On the bowling front, best figures of 3-5 were registered by New Zealand’s Scott Syris in 2010.

In 11 T20I matches played, West Indies and India have both won five games apiece. One game has ended in a no-result. Last time, India completed a clean sweep over West Indies in a T20I series played in India last year.

On other hand, West Indies will take heart from the fact they have managed to win three games out of four played against India in the Caribbean. The home side has managed to win their last T20I games played against India in the Caribbean.
